What is Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT)?

Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) is an advanced, three-dimensional imaging technology that provides detailed and accurate visuals of your teeth, jaw, and surrounding structures. Unlike traditional X-rays, CBCT captures high-resolution, 3D images in a single scan, enabling precise diagnosis and treatment planning.

This innovative imaging technique enhances the accuracy of dental procedures, minimizes patient exposure to radiation, and ensures a more comfortable experience. At Belleville Smiles Family Dentistry, we utilize CBCT to deliver safe, efficient, and personalized care.

The Benefits of CBCT

    Unmatched Precision and Accuracy:

  • CBCT provides highly detailed 3D images, allowing dentists to view anatomical structures from all angles. This precision enhances diagnostic accuracy and treatment outcomes.
  • Comprehensive Diagnosis and Planning:

  • Ideal for complex dental procedures such as dental implants, orthodontics, root canal therapy, and oral surgery.
  • Enables accurate assessment of bone structure, nerve pathways, and sinus cavities for precise treatment planning.
  • Minimized Radiation Exposure:

  • CBCT uses a focused, cone-shaped X-ray beam, reducing radiation exposure compared to conventional CT scans.
  • Safe and effective for both adults and children, ensuring patient comfort and safety.
  • Efficient and Quick Scanning:

  • A full 3D scan is completed in under a minute, minimizing discomfort and saving time.
  • Immediate imaging results allow for on-the-spot diagnosis and discussion of treatment options.
  • Enhanced Patient Communication:

  • Clear, 3D visuals help patients better understand their oral health conditions and treatment plans.
  • Improves patient confidence and satisfaction by providing a transparent view of dental procedures.

How Does CBCT Work?

Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) utilizes a specialized X-ray machine that rotates around the patient’s head, capturing multiple images from various angles. These images are then reconstructed into a detailed 3D model using advanced computer algorithms.
The CBCT Process:

    Preparation and Positioning:

  • The patient is comfortably seated, and the head is stabilized to ensure accurate imaging.
  • No special preparation is required, and the scan is painless.
  • Scanning and Imaging:

  • The CBCT machine rotates 360 degrees around the head, capturing numerous X-ray images in under a minute.
  • These images are compiled into a high-resolution, 3D model of the oral and maxillofacial region.
  • Diagnosis and Planning:

  • The dentist analyzes the 3D images for accurate diagnosis and treatment planning.
  • The detailed visuals allow for precise assessments of bone density, nerve locations, and other critical structures.
  • Patient Consultation:

  • Using the 3D images, the dentist explains the diagnosis and discusses personalized treatment options with the patient.
  • The clear visuals improve understanding and help patients make informed decisions about their dental care.

Why is CBCT a Gamechanger in Dental Imaging?

Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) revolutionizes dental diagnostics by offering detailed, 3D imaging with minimal radiation exposure. Traditional 2D X-rays often miss critical details, leading to less accurate diagnoses and treatment plans. In contrast, CBCT provides comprehensive visuals that reveal hidden structures, enabling precise and effective dental care.
CBCT is particularly beneficial for:

  • Dental Implants: Ensures accurate implant placement by analyzing bone structure and nerve locations.
  • Orthodontics: Provides detailed visuals for precise alignment and movement planning.
  • Oral Surgery: Enhances surgical accuracy by mapping out complex anatomical structures.
  • Endodontics (Root Canal Therapy): Identifies intricate root canals and detects hidden infections.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, CBCT is safe and uses significantly less radiation compared to traditional CT scans. Its cone-shaped X-ray beam minimizes exposure, making it suitable for both adults and children.

The scan itself takes less than a minute. Including preparation and image processing, the entire process is typically completed within 10-15 minutes.

No special preparation is required. However, you may be asked to remove any metal accessories (e.g., jewelry, glasses) that could interfere with the imaging process.

CBCT is particularly useful for dental implants, orthodontics, oral surgery, root canal therapy, and diagnosing complex dental issues. It provides detailed 3D visuals for accurate diagnosis and precise treatment planning.

Coverage for CBCT scans varies depending on your dental insurance plan and the reason for the scan. Our team can assist you in verifying your insurance benefits.

My young adult daughter is special needs. We moved to Belleville last June and she had graduated from her previous dental clinic at Holland Bloorview in Toronto a few years ago. Keeping her teeth in good condition is a priority for me but I was unable to get her in to a dentist before we moved. When I was taking her to her new day program I noticed this dental clinic and decided to call and find out if they accepted odsp and the new dental plan, they do!! So we made an appointment in hopes they would be able to manage her sensory issues. Well I have to say they were just fantastic!!! She did wonderful and the entire staff were welcoming tolerant and understanding. I’m just thrilled to death and give the highest recommendation I have!!!

Highly recommended place for dental work; Doctors are very supportive throughout whole process and also the assistant and receptionist were awesome. They arranged next day appointment for me due to higher pain level. It is very clean and bright place. I was very nervous about any kind of Dental procedure but at the end I had the best experience I could have get. Can’t complain about anything.

The staff are kind and genuinely caring at Smiles Dentistry. Dr Sudhir did an excellent job on some long neglected work I needed. He had to rebuild 1/2 of one of my molars and you’d never know there was any composite in that molar. It looks exactly as the real tooth looked. He stayed passed closing to ensure everything was done properly. He is very good at administering the freezing , keeping his patients as comfortable as possible and explained everything he had to do very well. Jennifer was the dental assistant for my previous visit, she was very kind and went out of her way to ensure I was comfortable during exams as I have spinal issues . Today Herschel was the dental assistant, he is very good at his job and I have to say what a warm, caring young man he is! Melissa in reception is just the friendly face and spunky personality that makes people feel welcome. If you haven’t been, I highly recommend. You will not be disappointed.

To say this place made me feel safe, healthy and at home is an understatement! I am NOT a fan of the dentist, however Dr. Shenoy gave me a freezing needle with such grace and skill I didn’t know I had one!! Yes that’s right, and my tooth individually was frozen not my entire side. The entire staff have treated me as if I have been a long time customer and I just attended my second visit! If you’re looking for a new, clean space with great staff and care this is your spot! Thank you so much, I cannot thank you and your team enough for the confidence I needed back in my smile!
